The cultural organisation Joventuts Musicals de Catalunya (JMI Catalonia) and the music publishing house and record label Ficta Edicions i Produccions, SL are promoting a biennial international music essay prize. The "Premi JM Catalunya - Ficta Edicions" (Award JM Catalonia - Ficta Edicions) on music essay emerges from the conviction that the cultural health of a country can also be measured through the quality and quantity of the essay work produced there and from the need to fill a gap in this subject in our country.
The competition will be organised every two years and its purpose is to provide a grant for the writing of a music essay in which the author or the topic must be Catalan. Eligible for this prize are music essay projects prepared by music scholars and written from any perspective, discipline, or scientific field. The author of the winning project will have one year to write the essay that will be published in the last trimester of 2022. The award is worth 3.000€ and the publication of the essay.
Proposals can be presented telematically until the 30th of April 2021. Apart from the essay project (with an outline or index) the candidates are expected to present an unpublished article about the topic or aspect of the topic object of the future essay. This article will be used to assess the ability of the author to combine academic rigour with vocation for dissemination, the capacity of enunciating a solid and coherent discourse, and the literary quality of the writing. The "premi especial Revista Musical Catalana" (special award Revista Musical Catalana) is also constituted, for which the journal edited by the Fundació Orfeó Català-Palau de la Música will publish one or various of such finalist articles.
FIRST EDITION'S JURY
The members of the jury will be Raül Garrigasait (1979, writer, Hellenist, and editor), Benet Casablancas (1956, composer, teacher, and essayist), Mònica Pagès (1972, cultural journalist, curator, translator, and writer), Joan Magrané (1988, composer and columnist), and Tess Knighton (1957, musicologist and teacher). Bernat Cabré, from Ficta Edicions and Miquel Cuenca, General Secretary of Joventuts Musicals de Catalunya will take charge of the chartered secretary of the jury with the right to speak but without a vote.
